1. 프로그램 소개
기초과학연구원(IBS)은 ‘인류 행복과 사회 발전에 공헌(Making Discoveries for Humanity and Society)’이라는 비전을 바탕으로 2011년 설립되었고, 현재 2개 연구소 및 35개의 연구단?센터가 운영되는 가운데 다양한 분야에서 우수한 연구 성과를 창출하고 있습니다.
IBS는 기초과학분야 젊은 과학자 육성의 일환으로 2016년부터 ‘Young Scientist Fellowship’을 시작하여 IBS 내 최첨단 연구 인프라를 활용하여 독립적인 연구를 수행하는 동시에, 우수한 연구자들과의 연구협력을 바탕으로 더욱 성장해 나갈 수 있는 기회를 제공하고 있습니다.
본 Young Scientist Fellowship이 잠재력있는 연구 인력들이 기초과학 분야에 핵심 연구 인력으로 발전하는 데 있어 소중한 디딤돌의 역할을 할 수 있기를 희망하며, 많은 분들의 관심과 지원을 부탁드립니다.
2. 지원 자격
- 모집공고가 게시된 해의 1월 1일(2023.1.1.)을 기준으로, 박사학위 취득 후 7년 이내(2016.1.1.이후 학위취득자) 또는 만 40세 미만 (1983.1.1. 이후 출생)의 박사학위 소지자
※ 졸업예정자의 경우, 2023.8.31.까지 박사학위를 취득하는 경우에 한함
- 현재 IBS 참여 연구자도 상기 자격 요건에 부합 시 지원 가능

4. 운영형태
- 전임근무 및 100% 연구 참여 원칙
※ 타 과제(예: 한국연구재단 세종과학펠로우십, 신진연구자지원사업 등)에 중복 선정된 경우 선정이 취소될 수 있으며, YSF 과제 수행 중 타 과제 참여 불가
- 연봉(6~7천만원) 포함 연 1.5~3억 원 이내 지원(실험분야는 연평균 최대 3억 원, 이론분야는 연평균 최대 1.8억 원 지원)
- IBS 연구단에서 근무하며 연구단 장비 및 연구시설을 활용하여 독립적 연구 수행(소규모 연구그룹 구성 가능)
※ YSF는 연구단 인프라를 우선적으로 활용해 연구를 수행하며, 장비 및 연구시설의 구축 규모와 시기는 심의를 통해 조정될 수 있음
- 최초 3년간 임용되며 단계평가 결과에 따라 2년 연장 가능
※ 단, 현재 IBS 참여 연구자가 소속 연구단의 YSF로 선정되는 경우 최대 3년간 지원
- 최종 선정자는 2024년 상반기(24.1.1 ~ 6.30) 내 임용 및 연구 착수 필수
※ 2024년 내 임용 및 연구 착수가 완료되지 않을 경우, YSF 선정이 취소될 수 있음
- YSF 그룹이 소속된 연구단 및 PRC 연구그룹이 폐지되는 경우, YSF 그룹 종료가 원칙

ㅇ (1차) 지원의향서(Letter of Intent) 접수 및 서면평가
1) 지원의향서(3페이지 내외) 접수 마감: ∼2023년 6월 12일
2) 연구단장 및 선정평가위원회의 지원자별 지원의향서 심사
3) 분야별 심층평가 대상자 선정 및 안내: ∼2023년 7월 중
※ 심층평가 대상자에 한하여 연구계획서(10페이지 내외), 추천서(최대 3건), 발표자료 제출 요청
ㅇ (2차) 연구계획서(Full Proposal) 접수 및 분야별 심층평가
1) 연구계획서, 추천서 및 발표자료 접수 마감: ∼2023년 8월 중
2) 연구단장의 지원자별 연구계획서 및 추천서 심사
3) 선정평가위원회의 분야별 면접심사(현장 발표) 실시: 2023년 9월~10월 중
※ 해외 거주 및 현장 참석에 제한이 있는 경우, 화상으로 면접심사 실시

2023 Call for IBS Young Scientist Fellowship
1. IBS Young Scientist Fellowship
With the vision of “Making discoveries for humanity and society,” the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) was founded in 2011 by the Korean government to promote basic science in Korea. To date, IBS operates two institute and 35 Research Centers which have been yielding outstanding results in various research fields.
The IBS Young Scientist Fellowship started in 2016 to play an active role in fostering the next generation of basic science leaders. This Fellowship offers junior scientists opportunities to conduct independent research with state-of-the-art research infrastructure of IBS and to grow on the basis of research collaborations with leading researchers.
We hope that the Fellowship serves as a stepping stone for our researchers to mature into leading researchers in basic science.
2. Eligibility
- Within seven years of obtaining a Ph.D. (obtained no earlier than 1 January 2016) or under the age of 40 with a Ph.D. (born no earlier than 1 January 1983)
※ Ph.D. candidates must be conferred with a Ph.D. degree no later than 31 August 2023.
- Current IBS researchers are eligible to apply if they meet the above criteria.

4. Benefits and Conditions
ㅇ Full-time work and 100% research participation in principle
- If successful candidates for the Fellowship are selected for other projects (e.g., Sejong Science Fellowship and Young Researcher Program of the National Research Foundation), their selection as Young Scientist Fellows (YSFs) may be cancelled. During the Fellowship term, participating in other projects funded by sources outside IBS are not allowed.
ㅇ Annual fund of KRW 150?300 mil. (up to KRW 180 mil. for theoretical fields and up to KRW 300 mil. for experimental fields), including salary of KRW 60?70 mil.
ㅇ YSFs will work at one of the IBS Centers and conduct independent research with research facilities and equipment of their Center. YSFs may organize small research groups.
- YSFs should prioritize using the advanced research infrastructure of their Center in conducting research. Although they may construct research equipment and facilities within their budget, the construction scale and timing may be adjusted through review.
ㅇ Appointment for three years with a possible two-year extension depending on the performance review results
- When current IBS researchers are selected as a YSF of their Center, support will be offered for up to three years.
ㅇ Successful candidates must be appointed and commence their research within the first half of 2024 (1 January?30 June 2024).
- If their appointment and research commencement are not completed within the first half of 2024, their selection may be cancelled.
ㅇ When the Center(PRC Group) to which a YSF group belongs is closed, the YSF group will also be closed in principle.

5. Selection Process (The schedule may change depending on the circumstances of IBS.)
ㅇ First phase: Letter of intent (approx. three pages) acceptance and evaluation
1) Submission deadline: 12 June 2023
2) Review of each letter of intent by the director and the selection and evaluation panel concerned
3) Invitation to submit full research proposals: July 2023
- Applicants who pass the first phase will be requested to submit an approx. 10-page full research proposal, up to three reference letters and presentation materials.
ㅇ Second phase: Full research proposal acceptance and in-depth evaluation by field
1) Submission deadline: August 2023
2) Review of each full proposal and reference letter by the director concerned
3) Interview (on-site presentation) by the selection and evaluation panel concerned: September~October 2023
- If candidates reside abroad or have difficulty attending on site, the evaluation will be held via video conference.
ㅇ Third phase: Comprehensive evaluation and notification of the results
1) Comprehensive evaluation by panel chairs
2) Final selection and notification of the results: November 2023
